BS EN 14583:2021

What is BS EN 14583 about?  

BS EN 14583 specifies general requirements for the evaluation of volumetric bioaerosol samplers to assess workplace exposure and their physical and biological performance. BS EN 14583 describes the procedures for the development of volumetric bioaerosol samplers as well as their properties and validation.  

BS EN 14583 is a description of a test facility and selection criteria for microbial strains that can be used to assess their biological performance. 

Note 1: BS EN 14583 is not intended for operators who use volumetric bioaerosol samplers to carry out exposure measurements for workers in occupational settings. 

Note 2: BS EN 14583 is not applicable for cleanroom measurements other than for occupational safety. 

Who is BS EN 14583 for? 

BS EN 14583 on volumetric bioaerosol samplers in workplace air is used by: 

• Testing laboratories

• Occupational hygienists  
• Other executives responsible for health and safety of employees 

Why should you use BS EN 14583? 

BS EN 14583 specifies requirements and methods to determine performance characteristics of volumetric bioaerosol samplers that are used to collect bioaerosols from the workplace atmosphere. 

BS EN 14583 provides requirements for manufacturers and developers of volumetric bioaerosol samplers as well as for test facilities with the equipment and skills to carry out the performance measurements of these samplers. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 14583:2021 supersedes EN 14583:2004. 

The major changes compared to EN 14583:2004 are as follows: 

• Document title changed 
• Scope rewritten and given more detailed 
• Terms and definitions already referred to in EN 1540 or EN 13098 deleted 
• Annex B was revised by replacing the former content with general requirements on test facilities and an overview on different types and examples of test facilities 
• Bibliography updated
