What is ISO 2647 about? 

ISO 2647 discusses wool. ISO 2647 specifies a method of test for determining the percentage of medullated wool fibres by means of the projection microscope. 

ISO 2647 is applicable to woollen and worsted products, at all stages, from raw materials to yarn.

Why should you use ISO 2647?  

Density is one of the fundamental physical characteristics of wool, which is assumed to remain constant, yet medullation, when present, is an obvious source of variation in the density of wool fibres. Medullated fibre measurements quantify characteristics affecting appearance and performance (e.g., apparent dyeability and resilience) of wool and mohair fabrics.  

ISO 2647 provides you guidance on the atmosphere for conditioning and testing, helps you with the preparation of test specimens and procedure for the test. ISO 2647 also helps you with the calculation and expression of results.  

ISO 2647 helps to determine the percentage of medullated wool fibres for maintaining the appearance and quality of the wool to make the best performance. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS ISO 2647:2020 supersedes ISO 2647:1973. BS ISO 2647:2020 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to ISO 2647:1973. These include: 

• The normative reference ISO/R 137 has been changed to ISO 137 
• Terms and definitions”, including the terms modulated fibre, normal medullated fibre and kemp fibre, have been added 
• The atmosphere for conditioning and testing has been revised  
• The procedure for determining the percentage of medullated fibres’ has been revised 
• The result expression has been revised  
• The appearance images of typical fibres have been added  
• The Bibliography has been added.
