BS EN 20 discusses wood preservatives. BS EN 20-1 is the first part of the BS EN 20 multi-series and discusses application by surface treatment. BS EN 20-1 specifies a method for the determination of the protective effectiveness or the toxic values of a wood preservative against infestation by Lyctus brunneus (Stephens) when the product is applied as a surface treatment to wood.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 20-1:1992 supersedes BS 5217:1975, which is withdrawn. BS EN 20-1:1992 includes some technical changes with respect to BS 5217:1975. These include:

• Enrichment of the test specimens with a nutrient solution
• A change in size of the test specimens from100 mm× 40 mm× 15 mm to 50 mm× 25 mm× 15 mm
• The preservative is applied by pipette to each face instead of dipping each specimen
• Each test specimen is exposed to only four male and four female insects instead of at least five of each
