What is BSI Flex 3131 v1.0 about?
BSI Flex 3131 v1.0 specifies requirements for the safe, interoperable, and effective wireless power transfer (WPT) of low-power electronic devices over distances of up to 20 metres.
Developed through the Standards Challenge Fund programme and sponsored by Innovate UK, the specification responds to growing demand for reliable charging solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smart clothing, wearable technologies, medical devices, portable electronics, and other embedded technologies.
As connected devices become increasingly integrated into everyday products, traditional charging methods such as cables, inductive charging, solar power, and kinetic energy can present practical limitations. BSI Flex 3131 helps address these challenges by establishing a framework for radio frequency (RF)-based wireless power transfer, enabling safer and more consistent deployment of WPT technologies while supporting innovation across emerging applications.
Who is the specification for?
The specification is primarily intended for:
-
designers and manufacturers of wirelessly charged low-power electronic devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smart clothing, wearables, medical and portable devices; and
- designers and manufacturers of RF power transmitters and receivers.
It will also be of interest to:
-
regulators, healthcare practitioners, healthcare insurance organizations, healthcare procurement organizations, health- and age-related charities, consumers, researchers and academics, trade associations, and legal organizations.
What does it cover?
BSI Flex 3131 establishes requirements that support the safe and effective implementation of wireless power transfer systems for low-power devices.
Key areas covered include:
-
Potential transmission frequency bands for use in the UK.
-
Protection of transmitters, receivers, and their components from damage (e.g. water).
-
Transmitter and receiver interoperability with other electronic devices.
-
Safety of transmitters, receivers, and associated charging, and safe interaction with other electronic devices and with living organisms.
Why should you use the standard?
Key benefits include:
- Supporting innovation by enabling the development of next-generation wireless charging solutions for emerging connected technologies.
- Enhancing safety through defined requirements for operation around people, medical devices, and other electronic equipment.
- Reducing development risk by aligning product design with established technical requirements and limitations.
- Increasing market confidence by demonstrating a commitment to recognized good practice and responsible technology deployment.
- Facilitating future scalability as wireless power transfer becomes increasingly integrated into consumer, industrial, and healthcare applications.
