ISO 16073 discusses requirements and test methods for wildland firefighting PPE. ISO 16073‑3 is an international standard on requirements and test methods for clothing of wildland firefighting PPE to prevent wildland firefighters from fire hazards.
ISO 16073‑3 is the third part of a multi-part series that specifies test methods and minimum performance requirements for personal protective clothing, designed to protect the wearer’s body, except for the head, hands, and feet, that is worn during wildland firefighting and associated activities. This clothing is not intended to protect fire entrapment.
ISO 16073‑3 covers the general design of the garment, the minimum level of performance for the materials employed, and the methods of test to determine these levels.
Note1: ISO 16073‑3 does not apply to clothing for use in situations encountered in structural firefighting, rescue, or where a high level of infrared radiation is expected, nor does ISO 16073‑3 covers clothing to protect against chemical, biological, electrical, or radiation hazards.
Note 2: ISO 16073‑3 does not protect against high mechanical risks such as for protection when using chain saws.
ISO 16073‑3 on requirements and test methods for clothing of wildland firefighting PPE is useful for:
Wildland firefighting involves work carried out mostly in summer temperatures and for many hours, during which the firefighter can develop prominent levels of metabolic heat. Therefore, the personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to be light, flexible, and commensurate with the risks to which the firefighter can be exposed to be effective without introducing excessive heat stress to the wearer.
ISO 16073‑3 provides you with the requirements and test methods for clothing of wildland firefighters’ PPE.
The requirements and test methods provided by ISO 16073‑3 assist you in the selection of clothing for PPE that is light and flexible and ensures to protect against wildland fire injuries.
Adopting ISO 16073‑3 enables you to enhance the efficiency of the wildland firefighting PPE and assist in producing wildland firefighting PPE of higher standard and quality.
BS ISO 16073‑3:2019 supersedes ISO 16073:2011. BS ISO 16073‑3:2019 has made some technical changes compared to the previous edition ISO 16073:2011. These include:
