BS 8636 details the methods of analysis which can be used to establish authenticity and consistency within the whisky production process, from distillation and maturation to bottling.
Though not a mandatory requirement, the specification in BS 8636 establishes a means to ensure consistency in whisky production processes, preserve the authenticity of distilling traditions and support national and global trade.
This voluntary standard has been developed by the consensus of whisky experts from the Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English whisky industries for use by:
whisky producers including new entrants to the industry, and specifically chief scientists/chemists, compliance and quality control managers and production staff including distillers and technical managers
contract laboratories
regulators
relevant trade bodies
BS 8636 covers the production process, the expected organoleptic characteristics, the typical ranges for analytes of interest and other technical matters.
Note: BS 8636:2023 does not include operational methods/issues.
It provides a consistent method of production for all UK distillers and new entrants to the industry, promoting fairness, transparency and quality that protects producers and consumers alike.
The use of analytical parameters and methods can help distillers determine and demonstrate the authenticity of their products.
It ensures internal quality control, and where necessary, compliance with additional external market requirements.
It can help distillers develop their expertise.
It can instil trust in the provenance and quality of whisky products and as such supports new market entry and cross border trade.
BS 8636:2023 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production.
