ISO/TS 22487 specifies methods for the determination of the total collected matter and for the subsequent determination of nicotine present in the smoke from water pipe tobacco generated and collected using a water pipe tobacco smoking machine.
ISO/TS 22487 is applicable for devices known as “narghile”, “hookah”, or “shisha” in which tobacco is only heated, not combusted. Other types, such as “Chinese water pipe”, are not covered.
ISO/TS 22487 on the determination of total collected matter and nicotine is useful for:
Tobacco smoke is a complex mixture consisting of many individual chemical constituents. These compounds exist as gases, vapors, and condensed aerosol particles. These processes and effects are particularly relevant to water pipe tobacco smoke where the smoke ages and passes through a water trap before it reaches the smoker which is a device used to smoke a special type of tobacco that comes in different flavors. In a water pipe charcoal is used to heat tobacco. The smoke from the heated tobacco is cooled by passing it through a water-filled bout.
ISO/TS 22487 provides test methods that will help determine the constitutes and the performance characteristics of tobacco.
