What is BS EN 13285 - Requirements for unbound mixture about?  

BS EN 13285 specifies requirements for unbound mixtures used for construction and maintenance of roads, airfields, and other trafficked areas. 

BS EN 13285 applies to unbound mixtures of natural, manufactured, and recycled aggregates with an upper sieve size (D) from 5,6 mm to 90 mm and lower sieve size (d) = 0 at the point of delivery. 

Note1: Mixtures with an upper sieve size (D) greater than 90 mm are not covered by BS EN 13285 but may be specified in the place of use. 

Note2: The water content of the mixture and the density of the installed layer are not specified mixture requirements. Both parameters are related to the control of the construction of the layer and are outside the scope of BS EN 13285.

BS EN 13285 provides properties of the aggregates used in the mixture: 

• Shape of coarse aggregate 
• Percentage of crushed particles and of totally rounded particles in coarse aggregates 
• Fines quality, resistance to fragmentation of coarse aggregate 
• Particle density, water absorption, resistance to wear of coarse aggregate 
• Chemical requirements (e.g., Water soluble sulphate) 
• Classification of the constituents of recycled aggregates 
• Durability requirements

What is changed since the last update?  

BS EN 13285:2018 supersedes BS EN 13285:2010, which is withdrawn.  

BS EN 13285:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13285:2018.  

These include: 

• Introduction of new categories for mixtures, designations, grading, and fines content 
• Adjustment of scope for new categories to an upper sieve size (D) range from 5,6 mm to 90 mm 
• Introduction of definitions for updated terms 
• A-Deviation by Estonia introduced in new Annex C. The former Annex C is now part of Clause 5
