BS EN 12111 is a European Standard that discusses safety requirements for tunnelling machines.
BS EN 12111 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events relevant to road
headers and continuous miners.
BS EN 12111 covers the incorporation of monitoring devices for hazardous atmospheres.
Note 1: Within the intended use, the overturning of the road header or continuous miner is not a significant hazard.
Note 2: Excavators are out of the scope of BS EN 12111 and are covered by BS EN 474-1:2006+A4:2013 and BS EN 474-5:2006+A3:2013.
Note: The following items and applications are not covered by BS EN 12111:
Note 1: BS EN 12111 is not applicable to machines manufactured before the date of publication of this European Standard by CEN.
Note 2: Directive 94/9/EC concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres can be applicable to the type of machine or equipment covered by BS EN 12111.
Note 3: BS EN 12111 is not intended to provide means of complying with the essential health and safety requirements of Directive 94/9/EC. For the application in potentially explosive atmospheres see BS EN 1710:2005+A1:2008.
BS EN 12111 on road headers and continuous miners safety is useful for:
Road headers and continuous miners allow for effective mining. Road headers are the preferred way of excavating tunnels in soft to medium-hard ground. Continuous miners concurrently cut and gather the material, transporting it in shuttle cars, haul trucks or a continuous haulage system.
The machinery and equipment concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, and events are covered are indicated in the scope of BS EN 12111. Actions to eliminate or reduce the risk are discussed in BS EN 12111.
BS EN 12111 provides you with a list of significant hazards as well as safety requirements and/or protective measures. Contact surfaces, stability, control station, falling objects, and ejected material have been elaborated-on, in BS EN 12111. The safety and reliability of control systems has also been discussed.
Automatic profiling and guidance systems, electrical requirements, portable equipment, accessory and lighting circuits, signals and warning devices, fire protection, electromagnetic compatibility, traveling, and maintenance areas are also discussed in BS EN 12111.
