BS EN 1968 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for periodic inspection and testing of seamless steel transportable gas cylinders (single or those from bundles) intended for compressed and liquefied gases under pressure, of water capacity from 0,5 l up to 150 l. BS EN 1968 may also be applied to cylinders of less than 0,5 l water capacity and for tubes up to 3 000 l water capacity.
BS EN 1968 specifies the requirements for periodic inspection and testing to verify the integrity of such gas cylinders to be reintroduced into service for a further period of time. BS EN 1968 also defines a procedure to qualify existing gas cylinders for free movement between member states of the European Union (see annex A).
Note: BS EN 1968 does not apply to periodic inspection and testing of acetylene cylinders or composite (fully wrapped or hoop-wrapped) steel cylinders.
BS EN 1968 on seamless steel gas cylinders is useful for:
Seamless gas cylinders are used for the storage and transportation of compressed gas or liquefied gas at high pressures. BS EN 1968 establishes safety methods for gas use, production, inspection, handling, and management. BS EN 1968 provides its users with test methods and instruction for periodic inspection of cylinders, that at the completion of the test the cylinders may be reintroduced into service for a further period of time.
Experience in the inspection and testing of cylinders which is specified in BS EN 1968 is an important factor when determining whether a cylinder should be returned to service. Using BS EN 1968 guidelines helps with high quality, durability, and the safety and protection of its users which results in the long service life of the cylinders in use.
