What is BS 8214 - Timber-based fire door assemblies about?

BS 8214 gives recommendations for the specification, installation, and maintenance of timber-based fire doors. The recommendations are applicable to timber-based hinged or pivoted pedestrian door assemblies or door leaves, fitted into frames of any material.

It is only applicable to door assemblies that are designed to provide fire resistance ratings of up to and including 2 h when tested in accordance with BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1.

It is applicable to fire performance and smoke control. It does not cover security, ergonomic factors, or functional performance other than with respect to fire resistance. It does not cover the impact safety of glazing, recommendations for which are given in BS 6262-4. Nor does it include doorsets that are covered in BS EN 16034.

This standard is the only official document giving recommendations for the installation and maintenance of fire doors. It is cited as a reference document in other industry documents and third-party certification schemes.

The standard was revised to reflect current practice and standards, particularly in relation to fire door installation and maintenance. Fire door assemblies represent a life-safety product and incorrect installation and maintenance may compromise the ability of the products to perform.

Suppliers of door assembly components are also looking for ways to align their offering with the reliability of assembly offered by doorsets. As revised, BS 8214 could now become the benchmark for fixing door assemblies.
