BS EN 13163 is the European standard for thermal insulation products that consistently offer the intended resistance to heat flow throughout the building's lifetime.
BS EN 13163 specifies the requirements for factory-made expanded polystyrene products, with or without rigid or flexible facings or coatings, which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings.
The products are manufactured in the form of boards or rolls or other preformed ware (flat, tapered, tongue and grooves, shiplap, profiled etc.).
Products covered by BS EN 13163 are also used for sound insulation and in prefabricated thermal insulation systems and composite panels.
BS EN 13163 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling.
Note 1: BS EN 13163 does not specify the required class or level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application.
Note 2: Products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,25 m²⋅K/W or a declared thermal conductivity at 10 °C greater than 0,060 W/(m⋅K) is not covered by BS EN 13163.
Note 3: BS EN 13163 does not cover in-situ insulation products, products intended to be used for the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations, products intended to be used in civil engineering applications and products intended to be used in beam and block systems in floors.
BS EN 13163 on thermal insulation products for buildings is useful for:
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a white foam thermoplastic material produced from solid beads of polystyrene primarily used for packaging, insulation, etc.
BS EN 13163 provides the properties of thermal insulation products to measure thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.
The classes of dimensional tolerances are specified in BS EN 13163 giving measures of length and width, thickness, squareness and flatness.
BS EN 13163 navigates you through the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of factory-made expanded polystyrene (EPS) products.
The designation code for expanded polystyrene products is illustrated in BS EN 13163.
Sampling, conditioning and dimensions of test specimens are determined by BS EN 13163 for the determination of thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.
BS EN 13163 provides the Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) with the compliance of the product with the requirements and the performance determination of product type by type testing and factory production control.
Marking, labelling and packaging of the expanded polystyrene products for insulation of buildings are set out in BS EN 13163.
Overall, BS EN 13163 leads you through the manufacturing of expanded polystyrene (EPS) products that are simple to install on the building site while maintaining durability and strength, which aids in the prevention or minimization of product damage.
As a result, EPS may be used as an insulation product that is extremely resistant to biological corrosion while also limiting the impacts of moisture and water vapour.
BS EN 13163:2012+A2:2016 supersedes BS EN 13163:2012+A1:2015. BS EN 13163:2012+A2:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13163:2012+A1:2015. These include:
