Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is a rigid insulation material that is manufactured using an extrusion process. BS EN 14934 discusses thermal insulation and lightweight fill products for civil engineering applications. The main aim of the BS EN 14934 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products, such that they are fit for their intended use.
BS EN 14934 specifies the requirements for factory-made products of extruded polystyrene foam which are used for frost insulation of roads, railways, trafficked areas, lightweight fill for reduction of horizontal and vertical earth pressure, and other civil engineering applications.
Note 1: BS EN 14934 does not specify the required level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The classes and levels required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.
Note 2: For applications where thermal resistance is required, products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,25 m²⋅K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,060 W/(m⋅ K)are not covered by BS EN 14934.
Note 3: BS EN 14934 does not cover in situ insulation products and products intended to be used for insulation of buildings, building equipment, and industrial installations or products intended for acoustic insulation.
BS EN 14934 on XPS foam specification is useful for:
Users of XPS foam products such as:
XPS foam is a dynamic material that can be used for various insulation applications. The products are manufactured in the form of boards, which are also available with special edge and surface treatment (tongue & grooves, shiplap, etc.). BS EN 14934 also covers multilayered insulation boards.
BS EN 14934 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking, and labelling.
As a manufacturer of XPS foam products, complying with BS EN 14934 can help demonstrate the performance and credibility of your products, ensuring that they are fit for purpose.
BS EN 14934 helps to mitigate risks related to frosty surfaces for pedestrians, commuters, and motorists.
