Expanded polystyrene (EPS) refers to a rigid, tough, and lightweight thermoplastic product. BS EN 14933 is a European Standard that discusses thermal insulation and lightweight fill products for civil engineering applications. BS EN 14933 provides manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of thermal insulation products, such that they are fit for their intended use.
BS EN 14933 specifies the requirements for factory-made products of expanded polystyrene which are used for frost insulation of roads, railways, trafficked areas, lightweight fill for reduction of horizontal and vertical earth pressure, and other civil engineering applications.
Note 1: BS EN 14933 does not specify the required class or level of a given property to be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The classes and levels required for a given application are to be found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.
Note 2: For applications where thermal resistance is required, products with a declared thermal resistance lower than 0,25 m²⋅K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,060 W/(m⋅K) are not covered by BS EN 14933.
Note 3: BS EN 14933 does not cover in situ insulation products and products intended to be used for the insulation of buildings, building equipment, and industrial installations or products intended for acoustic insulation.
BS EN 14933 on expanded polystyrene specification is useful for:
EPS, made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads, is lightweight, strong, and has excellent thermal insulation properties.
The products are manufactured in the form of boards or blocks. BS EN 14933 also covers specially cut-shaped boards or blocks.
BS EN 14933 describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking, and labelling.
As a manufacturer of thermal insulation products, complying with BS EN 14933 helps you to demonstrate the performance and credibility of your products, ensuring that they are fit for purpose. BS EN 14933 helps to make trafficked areas safer for motorists.
