Typically, colorants were obtained from plants, or various materials were extracted from minerals or insects. When dyeing fabrics using materials derived from these natural substances, it becomes necessary to identify which substance the colorant was derived from. ISO 22195-2 is developed to identify which type of natural substance has been used.
Natural colorants usually contain several chemical constituents. Depending on the type of natural colorant, each contains a distinctive chemical. This characteristics chemical remains in the fibre dyed with natural colorants. Therefore, analysis of natural colorant fabric by chromatography can detect characteristics chemical depending on the kind of natural colorant.
