What is ISO 12945-3 about?

ISO 12945-3 is the third part of the multi-series standard ISO 12945. ISO 12945-3 specifies a method for the determination of the resistance to pilling, fuzzing, and matting of textile fabrics using the random tumble pilling tester. This method is applicable to most of the woven and knitted fabrics, including napped fabrics (fleeces, inlay fabrics).

Note- ISO 12945-3 is not applicable to fabrics that cannot tumble freely.

Why should you use ISO 12945-3?

A pilling test will measure and determine how resistant fabrics are to pilling or fuzzing. 

Pills are formed when fibres on a fabric surface “tease out” and become entangled during wear. Such surface deterioration is undesirable, but the degree of consumer tolerance for a given level of pilling will depend on the garment type and fabric end-use.

The Random Tumble Pilling Tester is used to determine the pilling and fuzzing characteristics of textile fabrics.
