What is ISO/TR 11827 – Composition testing and identification of fibres about?  

ISO/TR 11827 is an international standard that focuses on composition testing and identification of fibres. Textile is a flexible material made by creating an interlocking bundle of yarns or threads, which are produced by spinning raw fibres (from either natural or synthetic sources) into long and twisted lengths. ISO/TR 11827 describes procedures for the identification of natural and man-made fibres and may be used, when necessary, to coordinate with methods for the quantitative analysis of fibre blends.

Textile testing is the term for a whole series of tests that examine the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of textiles. These tests are sometimes done before a textile goes into widespread use, or they're done on textiles arriving from other countries for sale in all markets.  

ISO/TR 11827 covers the identification of natural and man-made fibres in textiles and the accurate determination of the composition of each fibre present is a legal requirement in many countries throughout the world for imported textile goods and at the point of sale to the public. 

ISO/TR 11827 informs that identification can be carried out by several different techniques, e.g. microscopy, solubility, spectroscopy, melting point, pyrolysis, density, refractive index, etc. Using ISO/TR 11827 you can describe procedures for the identification of natural and man-made fibres and may be used, when necessary, to coordinate with methods for the quantitative analysis of fibre blends. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

PD CEN ISO/TR 11827:2016 supersedes PD ISO/TR 11827:2012 which has been withdrawn. PD CEN ISO/TR 11827:2016 has been editorially revised.
