BS EN 12390 is a series of the European standard on testing hardened concrete that is used in controlling and confirming the quality of cement concrete works.
BS EN 12390-11 is the 11th part of the BS EN 12390 series of documents that specifies a method for determining the unidirectional non-steady state chloride diffusion and surface concentration of conditioned specimens of hardened concrete.
The test method enables the determination of the chloride penetration at a specified age, e.g., for ranking of concrete quality by comparative testing. Since resistance to chloride penetration depends on ageing, including the effects of continual hydration, then the ranking may also change with age.
Note: The test procedure does not apply to concrete with surface treatments such as silanes and it may not apply to concrete containing fibres.
BS EN 12390-11 on hardened concrete is useful for:
Once the concrete has hardened, it can be subjected to a wide range of tests to prove its ability to perform as planned or to discover its characteristics.
BS EN 12390-11 provides the requirements on the reagents and apparatus used to test the chloride resistance of concrete.
Preparation of specimens and sub-specimens are specified in BS EN 12390-11 along with the conditioning and preparation of profile specimens for chloride testing.
BS EN 12390-11 navigates you through the test procedure to test chlorides exposure present in concrete through exposure conditions, exposure methods and exposure periods.
The regression procedure and expression of results of the chloride content are outlined in BS EN 12390-11 as well as the estimation of the precision.
Overall, BS EN 12390-11 assist you in testing hardened concrete to accelerate cement hydration which helps to achieve higher efficiency of the material used and greater assurance of the performance of the concrete with regard to both strength and durability.
In this manner, hardened concrete can be used for buildings which is the strongest and most durable construction material that can withstand the structural and service applied loads and it is durable enough for the environmental risk for which it is designed.
BS EN 12390-11:2015 supersedes DD CEN/TS 12390-11:2010. BS EN 12390-11:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to DD CEN/TS 12390-11:2010. These include:
