BS EN 12390‑12 is the 12th part of the BS EN 12390 series of documents that quantifies the carbonation resistance of concrete using test conditions that accelerate the rate of carbonation. After a period of preconditioning, the test is carried out under controlled exposure conditions using an increased level of carbon dioxide.
NOTE: This procedure is not a method for the determination of carbonation depths in existing concrete structures.
BS EN 12390‑12 on carbonation resistance of concrete is useful for:
Carbonation resistance testing of concrete is used to determine the extent of carbon dioxide infiltration into the concrete.
BS EN 12390‑12 provides test methods to measure carbonation rate, depth of carbonation, the effective time of concrete. BS EN 12390‑12 gives information about reagents and apparatus used on the test specimen for the suppliers of some indicator solutions that provide a fixing solution to permanently fix the color change.
Overall, these test methods provide the measure of resistance to corrosion of reinforcement induced by carbonation to ensure serviceability and consequently carbonation behavior of concrete.
