BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 is a part of multi-series in European standard which lays down requirements for the design qualification of terrestrial photovoltaic modules suitable for long-term operation in open-air climates. The useful service life of modules so qualified will depend on their design, their environment, and the conditions under which they are operated.
BS EN IEC 6121513 gives several types of testing such as thermal cycling test, humidity-freeze test, damp heat test, wet leakage current test, static mechanical test, hail test and bypass diode test for testing of thin-film amorphous silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) modules.
Note 1: BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 applies to all thin-film amorphous silicon (a-Si; a-Si/μc-Si) based terrestrial flat plate modules. As such, it addresses special requirements for testing of this technology supplementing requirements for testing.
Note 2: BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 does not apply to modules used with concentrated sunlight although it may be utilized for low concentrator modules (1 to 3 suns). For low concentration modules, all tests are performed using the irradiance, current, voltage and power levels expected at the design concentration.
BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 on thin-film amorphous silicon-based photovoltaic modules is applicable to:
Amorphous silicon photovoltaic module has been used as a photovoltaic solar cell material for devices which requires very little power. Amorphous silicon is used in devices such as pocket calculator, hand watch etc which requires low power for their use.
BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 gives you the information about thin-film amorphous silicon-based photovoltaic modules which are required where less power supply needs to be given, for small devices. This enables you a low-cost production of amorphous silicon solar cells and help you in increasing the gains via manufacture of amorphous silicon photovoltaic modules.
BS EN IEC 6121513 examines the quality of amorphous silicon photovoltaic modules by several types of testing such as thermal cycling test, humidity-freeze test, damp heat test, wet leakage current test, static mechanical test, hail test and bypass diode test, which ensure the safety and protection of amorphous silicon.
The objective of BS EN IEC 61215-1-3 is to determine the electrical characteristics of the module and to show, as far as possible within reasonable constraints of cost and time, that the module can withstand prolonged exposure outdoors.
BS EN IEC 61215-1-3:2021 supersedes BS EN 61215‑1‑3:2017, which is withdrawn.
