The third in a nine-part European series on safe terminations for steel wire ropes, BS EN 13411-3:2022 deals with requirements for ferrules, ferrule-securing and ferrule-secured systems type testing, as well as all the significant hazards relevant to this type of steel wire rope termination.
This document details the requirements for ferrules and the ferrule-securing of eyes and endless loops. It applies to the ferrule-securing of eye terminations formed either by a Flemish eye or turnback eye and covers ferrules made of non-alloy carbon steel and aluminium.
BS EN 13411-3 applies to slings and assemblies using steel wire ropes for general lifting applications up to and including 60 mm diameter conforming to BS EN 12385-4, lift ropes conforming to BS EN 12385-5 and spiral strand ropes conforming to BS EN 12385-10. It is approved for use on rope grades up to 1960. Type testing of ferrule-secured systems and manufacturing quality control requirements are also specified.
BS EN 13411-3 also deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events relevant to this particular steel wire rope termination when used as intended and under conditions of use which are foreseeable by the manufacturer.
BS EN 13411-3 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
This is a revision of BS EN 13411-3:2004+A1:2008. The change in BS EN 13411-3:2022 is the removal of Annexes ZA and ZB in accordance with the standard being de-harmonized. This is a minor technical change, but important from a legal viewpoint in that the standard is no longer harmonized and reference will be removed from the EU Journal.
