What are these documents about?
These new international standards replace a number of standards that have been the main surface texture standards since the late 1990s and are being published as part of a package of new and revised surface texture standards:
BS EN ISO 21920-1:2022 provides updated requirements for indicating surface texture on engineering drawings and CAD models
BS EN ISO 21920-2:2022 gives updated terms, definitions and parameters for surface texture requirements used on engineering drawings and CAD models.
BS EN ISO 21920-3:2022 is on specification operators.
Who is this for?
- Mechanical engineers, design engineers and engineering designers in aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, nuclear and medical devices sectors
- Any engineering or manufacturing organizations that need to produce engineering drawings (using 2D manual drawings or 3D CAD-generated models) in their product design and development processes
- Manufacturing and production engineers, and metrologists and quality control teams who measure and verify that specifications have been met
- Independent design consultancies and design agencies
- Users of the former national standard BS 308
Why should you use this solution pack?
It helps companies indicate surface texture requirements unequivocally on drawings and CAD models. It can also help users to:
- Implement a new, modern approach to the indication of surface texture requirements on mechanical engineering drawings and CAD models
- Move away from traditional, outdated practices
- Enter new markets
- Increase confidence in their work product
BS EN ISO 21920 series contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
