What is BS EN 15512 about?

BS EN 15512 specifies the structural design requirements applicable to all types of adjustable beam pallet rack systems fabricated from steel members.  Beam pallet rack systems are used for the storage of unit loads and are subject to predominantly static loads. Both un-braced and bracing systems are included.

BS EN 15512 gives guidelines for the design of clad rack buildings where requirements are not covered in the EN 1993 series. The requirements of this document also apply to ancillary structures, where rack components are employed as the main structural members.

Note: BS EN 15512 does not cover other generic types of storage structures. Specifically, this document does not apply to mobile storage systems, drive-in, drive-through, pallet live storage, push-back, shuttle systems, systems where two or more cranes operate one above another in the same aisle, and cantilever racks, or static steel shelving systems

Who is BS EN 15512 for?

BS EN 15512 on adjustable pallet racking systems is useful for:

  • Designers and structural engineers
  • Regulatory authorities
  • Manufacturers of storage systems
  • Warehouse workers

Why should you use BS EN 15512 for

Pallet racking systems are load-bearing structures for the storage of goods in warehouses. The goods to be stored are generally on pallets or in box containers. The pallet racking system is constructed from steel components including upright frames and beams. Special beam to column (upright) connections and bracing systems are utilized, in order to achieve a three-dimensional steel ‘sway’ or ‘braced’ structure with “aisles” to enable order pickers, industrial trucks, or stacker cranes to reach the storage positions. Although components are standardized, they are only standard to each manufacturer. Because of the differences in the shape of structural components, detailing, and connection types of additional technical information to the Eurocodes are required. BS EN 15512 provides technical information to the Eurocodes in order to have reliable state-of-the-art guidance for the practicing designer involved in designing racking. The design, construction, and installation of adjustable pallet racking systems should conform to BS EN 15512.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15512:2020 supersedes BS EN 15512:2009, which is withdrawn.

Compared to EN 15512:2009, the overall document structure has been updated to be more similar to the Eurocode, several clauses were updated to the current state of Standards and FEM recommendations, alternative options for testing setups were included.
