BS EN 10164 is an European standard on steel products that discusses the criteria for improving deformation properties. BS EN 10164 specifies deformation properties perpendicular to the surface of the product.
BS EN 10164 can be applied as a supplement to all product standards for flat products and sections of fully killed steels, except stainless steels. BS EN 10164 covers products having a nominal thickness (t) between 15 mm and 400 mm of steels with a specified minimum upper yield strength ReH or proof strength Rp0,2 ≤ 960 MPa1) for which improved through-thickness properties are required.
BS EN 10164 can be applied to other steel types if agreed at the time of the order.
BS EN 10164 can be applied to products with thickness between 10 mm ≤ t <15 mm if agreed at the time of the order. See option 1.
BS EN 10164 can be applied to products with thickness t > 400 mm if agreed at the time of the order.
BS EN 10164 on steel products is beneficial for:
Flat products and sections of steel as normally manufactured have deformation properties perpendicular to the surface (through-thickness) which are different from those obtained in the surface direction. This anisotropy of the properties may lead to difficulties in welded structures, for instance, lamellar tearing. It is, however, possible to improve the through-thickness properties by using additional steelmaking procedures.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 10164, you can increase the through thickness properties with the help of additional steel making procedures.
Thickness properties are characterized in BS EN 10164 by specified values for reduction of area in a through-thickness tensile test. With the help of BS EN 10164, you can reduce the risk of lamellar tearing and rectify the difficulties faced duing welding structures.
BS EN 10164:2018 supersedes BS EN 10164:2004, which is withdrawn.
