Bituminous sprays are an essential component in a number of highway works. Depending on the product and its installation, they provide bonding, sealing, stress dissipation and waterproofing, and extend the life of road pavements, which increases the sustainable use of resources such as aggregates.
BS 9434 is a national standard dealing with the use of bituminous spray stress absorbing membrane interlayers (SAMIs).
Who is BS 9434 - Spray applied bitumen system for SAMI for?
Public and private sector clients in the highways industry along with their contractors and suppliers, including:
BS 9434 specifies requirements for the use of bituminous spray stress absorbing membrane interlayers (SAMIs). There are a range of different materials and techniques available for SAMIs, including asphalt, geosynthetics, and bituminous binders, which can include bitumen emulsion, paving grade, and modified bitumen.
NOTE: In addition to BS 9434:2023, PD 6691 gives guidance on the requirements for asphalt and BS ISO NP TR 18228-10 gives guidance on interlayers with geosynthetics.
BS 9434:2023 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 on decent work and economic growth, Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, Goal 13 on climate action and Goal 17 on partnership for the goals.
BS 9434:2023 is a new British Standard, introduced to replace Clause 16 in BS 434-2:2006 which has been superseded.
