BS EN 60465 covers specifications and test methods for unused mineral insulating oils, as delivered, intended for use in cables with oil ducts. These include hollow core cables, pipe type cables and any others in which provision is made for the oil to flow. Oils concerned are obtained by distillation and refining of petroleum. Oils with and without additives are within the scope of this standard.
BS EN 60465 does not apply to mineral insulating oils used in transformers, switchgear, capacitors and similar equipment or to hydrocarbon insulating liquids obtained by synthesis.
For the purposes of BS EN 60465 three grades of oil are considered: class I, class II and class III, based on the values of certain physical properties namely: viscosity, flashpoint and pour-point.
BS EN 60465 on unused mineral insulating oils requirements and tests is useful for:
Insulating mineral oils used in cable with oil ducts improve temperature and dielectric stress performance as well.
BS EN 60465 provides test methods for unused mineral insulating oils for determining and categorising them easily. Other than this, BS EN 60465 also outlines specifications on:
BS EN 60465 can help in the inspection of unused mineral oils before it is entered into the system for better insulation.
