BS 4174 focuses on ferrous and non-ferrous tapping screws and metallic drive screws. Provisions are made for two classes of tapping screw, namely thread forming and thread cutting, each available in several types which are described and illustrated in BS 4174.
BS 4174 provides general dimensions for countersunk, raised countersunk, and pan head tapping screws with slotted or recessed heads, slotted mushroom heads, recessed flange heads and hexagon head tapping screws and round head metallic drive screws. Countersunk and raised countersunk head tapping screws in short lengths have shallower truncated heads than those in normal lengths and separate tables of dimensions are accordingly provided in BS 4174.
Note: BS 4174 does not include round head screws other than metallic drive screws as it is considered that pan head screws provide for most of the applications in which round head screws are normally used and allow more conveniently for the application of torque.
BS 4174 on self-tapping screws and metallic drive screws is useful for:
The self-drilling screws are used for a variety of screws for quick drilling into all kinds of materials, be it metal or wood. Metallic drive screws are self-tapping screws designed to create their own mating threads and permanently fasten metal and plastic objects, which makes them tamper-resistant. BS 4174 provides you with all the requirements, dimensions, tolerances, specifications for self-tapping screws and metallic drive screws and their types.
BS 4174 provides you with detailed information about suitable head flushness gauge for countersunk head screws and a gauge for checking recess penetration on recessed head screws together with testing requirements for the inspection of tapping screws and approximate hole sizes for steel screws in various materials.
BS 4174 covers the various types of thread forming, thread cutting and drive screws. BS 4174 also guides you with materials used in the manufacture of tapping screws and metallic drive screws. BS 4174 guidelines help to design and supply high-quality self-tapping screws and metallic drive screws to your customers.
