What’s changed since the last update?  

BS 553:1990 supersedes BS 553:1965, which is withdrawn. BS 553:1990 includes some technical changes with respect to BS 553:1965. These include: 

• The requirements for colour, residue on evaporation and acidity have each been made more stringent 
• The requirement for relative density has been replaced by one for density at 20 °C. 
• In addition, some of the appendices describing test methods in the previous edition have been replaced by references to general test methods.
