What is BS 7167 - Specification for Bordeaux connections about?  

BS 7167 is a British Standard on the specification for Bordeaux connections. The main aim of BS 7167 is to ensure the safe and efficient lifting, moving, and positioning of lifting equipment like cranes or other equipment. 

BS 7167 specifies requirements for form, dimensions, materials, marking and manufacturer’s certificates of Bordeaux connections having safe working loads from 2.16 t to 15.7 t, suitable for the attachment of wire ropes of 13 mm diameter to 35 mm diameter inclusive, to chain end links or to other ropes.

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS 7167:1990 supersedes BS 461:1970. BS 7167:1990 includes some technical changes with respect to BS 461:1970. These include: 

• The 1958 Bordeaux connection was designed for ropes having breaking loads significantly lower than those now in current use. Accordingly, the connection has been redesigned, particularly the link, to be suitable for higher tensile ropes to BS 302-2. 
• The nominal size of Bordeaux connection is based on the nominal diameter of the wire rope for which it was designed not on the safe working load (SWL) 
• The material used for the link was BS 970-grade En 5a in the 1958 edition of BS 461 and in the 1970 edition it was to BS 970-1 steel designations 060A27 or 080A30 or 150M19.  Accordingly, steel to BS 970-1 designation 605M36 in the hardened or tempered condition was chosen.
