What is ISO 8847 about?

ISO 8847 discusses standards for steering gear for small craft. ISO 8847 specifies the requirements for the design, installation, and testing of cable over pulley steering systems on small craft with or without a propulsion engine(s), and small craft with outboard engine(s) up to and including 37 kW total power.

ISO 8847 focuses on the requirements for the design and testing of all components of a cable over pulley steering system, from the steering mechanism to the mechanical interface with the rudder shaft or the outboard engine.

ISO 8847 applies to cable over pulley steering systems, whether for pedestal or bulkhead types.

Note: ISO 8847 does not include emergency means of steering the craft.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 8847:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 8847:2017. BS EN ISO 8847:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 8847:2017. These include:
