ISO 8847 discusses standards for steering gear for small craft. ISO 8847 specifies the requirements for the design, installation, and testing of cable over pulley steering systems on small craft with or without a propulsion engine(s), and small craft with outboard engine(s) up to and including 37 kW total power.
ISO 8847 focuses on the requirements for the design and testing of all components of a cable over pulley steering system, from the steering mechanism to the mechanical interface with the rudder shaft or the outboard engine.
ISO 8847 applies to cable over pulley steering systems, whether for pedestal or bulkhead types.
Note: ISO 8847 does not include emergency means of steering the craft.
ISO 8847 on steering gear for small craft is applicable to:
ISO 8847 provides you with the steering system requirements for the steering gear, cables, pulleys, conduit, and cable drums used on the steering systems of the craft. You will be able to manufacture a steering gear that is safe to use, following the design guidelines provided in ISO 8847.ISO 8847 guides you about installation of all cable and pulley steering systems. ISO 8847 also provides you with testing requirements to test cable for engine cable over pulley systems. You will also lengthen the lifespan of your small craft with ISO 8847 guidelines. This will also ensure the prevention of waste.
By adopting ISO 8847, you can build effective small craft and have quality assurance to ensure that small crafts are produced according to the requirements and build trust in their use throughout the ship and marine supply chain.
