Electrical power systems are essential for both homes and industries as a source or supplier of power. BS EN 60143-1 applies both to capacitor units and capacitor banks intended to be used connected in series with an a.c. transmission or distribution line or circuit forming part of an a.c. power system having a frequency of 15 Hz to 60 Hz. The series capacitor units and banks are usually intended for high-voltage power systems. BS EN 60143-1 applies to the complete voltage range. BS EN 60143-1 does not apply to capacitors of the self-healing metallized dielectric type.

A separate standard for internal fuses for series capacitors, IEC 601433 has been revised and was completed in 2013.

BS EN 60143-1 also provides service conditions, quality requirements for capacitor unit, insulation level, overloads, overvoltages, duty cycles etc. The primary focus of BS EN 60143-1 is on transmission application.
