ISO 1496-1 is the first part of the multi-series international standard that focuses on the testing specification of cargo containers.
ISO 1496-1 specifies the basic specifications and testing requirements for ISO series 1 freight containers of the enclosed general-purpose types and certain specific purpose types (closed, vented, ventilated or open-top) which are suitable for international exchange and conveyance by road, rail and sea, including interchange between these forms of transport.
Note-
ISO 1496-1 does not cover ventilation arrangements, either vented or ventilated.

ISO 1496-1 helps to test the ability of a container to withstand being lifted, from its four bottom corner fittings, using lifting devices bearing on the bottom corner fittings only and attached to a single transverse central spreader beam, above the container.
