ISO 8586 is an international standard on sensory analysis that discusses the guidance on the selection, training and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors to enhance the recruitment process for assessors.
ISO 8586 specifies criteria for the selection and procedures for the training and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors.
ISO 8586 supplements the information given in ISO 6658.
ISO 8586 on the selection, training, and monitoring of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors is useful for:
“Sensory assessors” are any people taking part in a sensory test. They can be “naive assessors” who do not have to meet any precise criterion, or “initiated assessors” who have already participated in sensory tests.
“Selected assessors” are chosen for their ability to perform a sensory test.
“Expert sensory assessors” are selected assessors with demonstrated sensory sensitivity and with considerable training and experience in sensory testing, who can make consistent and repeatable sensory assessments of various products.
ISO 858 provides you with guidance on the selection of assessors, recruitment, preliminary screening and initiation, background information and preselection, training of assessors, the final choice of panels for methods, training of experts, monitoring, and testing of the performance of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors, management, and follow-up of the group, etc.
The guidance provided by ISO 858 assists you in the recruitment and preliminary screening of naive assessors, selection of initiated assessors to determine their ability to perform tests and ensuring to improve the performance of selected assessors and expert sensory assessors.
ISO 858 helps you provide assessors with a rudimentary knowledge of procedures used in sensory analysis and to develop their ability to detect, recognize, describe and discriminate sensory stimuli. To train assessors to use this expertise so that they may become proficient in the use of such methods with products.
BS EN ISO 8586:2014 supersedes ISO 8586:2012, which is withdrawn. In BS EN ISO 8586:2014 the formula for calculation of S7 has been corrected as compared to the previous editions ISO 8586:2012.
