What is BSI Flex 335 - SAPIENT network of autonomous sensors and effectors about?

The BSI Flex process develops standards quickly, over several iterations, to meet rapidly evolving need in dynamic markets.

Funded by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and sponsored and written by the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), BSI Flex 335:2023 is the first iteration of a standard that gives manufacturers and sensor network operators requirements for interfaces between sensor edge nodes, effector nodes and fusion nodes.

The SAPIENT (Sensing for Asset Protection with Integrated Electronic Networked Technology) specification was generated by MOD (Ministry of Defence). They now want to see it adopted by a diverse range of private sector users to help accelerate its development and support the creation of new features.

Who is BSI Flex 335 - SAPIENT network of autonomous sensors and effectors for?

  • developers of sensors and processing modules
  • suppliers and manufacturers of sensors and processing modules.

What does BSI Flex 335 - SAPIENT network of autonomous sensors and effectors cover?

BSI Flex 335 provides the structure, format and content of the SAPIENT messages as well as guidance on how a Graphical User Interface (GUI) links to the output of any selected system.

The key principles of SAPIENT are:

  • sensor modularity – sensors of different types using the same interface for communication
  • reduction in operator workload during monitoring activities
  • improved autonomy for decision making (automatic identification of threat activities to reduce false alarm rates, allowing for autonomous context driven decision making)
  • improved autonomy for sensor management
  • lower bandwidth requirements for network traffic.

Note: BSI Flex 335:2023 does not specify specific sensors. Nor does it specify implementation-specific parameters such as bearer technology and security solutions.

Why should you use BSI Flex 335 - SAPIENT network of autonomous sensors and effectors?

  • BSI Flex 335 supplies a needed specification that links sensor edge nodes, effector nodes and fusion nodes.
  • It’s a dynamic work in progress and as such available as a free download. The document will be updated later in 2023 after a review period and to reflect user discussion and stakeholder input from the relevant industries.
  • Adoption can reduce systems integration time, contribute to reduced operator workload, increase situational awareness and optimize system decision-making.
  • In turn, its use can create systems that deliver superior performance and competitive advantage.
