What is BS EN 8150 about?

BS EN 81 discuss safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts. BS EN 8150 specifies the design rules, calculations, examinations, and tests of lift components which are referred to by other standards used for the design of passenger lifts, goods passenger lifts, goods only lifts, and other similar types of lifting appliances.

BS EN 8150 includes a type-examination certificate of the following component types:

  • Type examination of Overspeed governors
  • Type examination of buffers
  • Type examination of safety circuits containing electronic components and/or programmable electronic systems
  • Type examination of ascending car Overspeed protection means
  • Type examination of unintended car movement protection means
  • Type examination of rupture valve/one-way restrictor

Who is BS EN 8150 for?

BS EN 8150 on safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts is useful for:

  • Lift Manufacturers
  • Health and safety bodies
  • Builders
  • Estate managers
  • Civil engineers
  • Contractors

Why should you use BS EN 8150

Safety by design reduces exposure to product liability, lawsuits, and product recall campaigns. Anticipating, identifying, and controlling hazards in the design phase is easier, cheaper, and more effective than redesigning a product or process placed in production.

BS EN 8150 guides you with the design rules, calculations, examinations, and tests for lift components. BS EN 8150 defines safety rules related to lifts with a view to safeguarding persons and objects against the risk of accidents associated with the user, maintenance, and emergency operation of lifts. The design rules given in BS EN 8150 help you in designing lifts in a safer manner and thus safeguarding your customers from potential hazards. The examination and tests in BS EN 8150 help you to ensure user safety in lifts.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 8150:2020 supersedes BS EN 8150:2014, which is withdrawn. BS EN 8150:2020 includes some significant changes with respect to BS EN 8150:2014. These include:

  • All externally referenced standards have now been dated
  • A new Annex ZA has been developed in order to be aligned with the requirements of the EU Commission Standardization Request “M/549 C(2016) 5884 final”
