What is IEC 61010-2-030 about?  

IEC 61010-2-030 specifies requirements for equipment having testing or measuring circuits that are connected for test or measurement purposes to circuits outside the measurement equipment. 

This group safety publication is primarily intended to be used as a product safety standard for the products mentioned in the scope, also be used by technical committees in the preparation of their publications for products like those mentioned in the scope of IEC 61010-2-030 

IEC 61010-2-030 includes measuring circuits that are part of electrical tests and measurement equipment, laboratory equipment, or process control equipment. The existence of these circuits in equipment requires additional protective means between the circuit and an operator. 

Equipment having these testing and measuring circuits may be intended for performing tests and measurements on hazardous conductors, including MAINS conductors and telecommunication network conductors. 

Who is IEC 61010-2-030 for? 

IEC 61010-2-030 on requirements for equipment having testing or measuring circuits is applicable to: 

• The electronic or electric device manufacturers and suppliers 
• Safety and regulatory bodies 
• Electric circuit manufacturers 
• End users 

Why should you use IEC 61010-2-030?  

Testing and measuring circuits are subjected to WORKING VOLTAGES and transient stresses  from the circuit to which they are connected during measurement or test. When the measuring circuit is used to measure MAINS, the transient stresses can be estimated by the location  within the installation at which the measurement is performed. 

When the measuring circuit is used to measure live MAINS, there is a risk of arc blast. 
MEASUREMENT CATEGORIES define the amount of energy available, which may contribute to arc flash. In conditions where arc flash can exist, IEC 61010-2-030 provides instructions for use need to specify additional precautions to reduce the HAZARD related to shock and burn from arc flash. 

IEC 61010-2-030 provides guidance to the equipment manufacturer on HAZARDS that should be considered for equipment intended to measure electrical quantities in certain environments which ensures safety of the users.  

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN IEC 61010-2-030:2021+A11:2021 document supersedes EN 61010-2 030:2010. 

BS EN IEC 61010-2-030:2021+A11:202 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the EN 61010-2-030:2010: 

• Indirect bonding for testing and measuring circuits has been modified to consider the duration of current flow versus body current for a.c. and d.c. currents  
• CLEARANCE and CREEPAGE DISTANCE for WET LOCATIONS and for measuring circuit TERMINAL exceeding 1 000 V a.c. or d.c have been specified 
• The voltage source for testing overvoltage limiting component or circuit may be limited to 400 V 
• Requirements against TRANSIENT OVERVOLTAGES for MAINS voltage measuring circuits have been added 
• Requirements for measuring circuits from 1 000 V d.c. to 1 500 V d.c. have been added 
• The corrigendum has been included in Tables K.102 to K.104 
• Requirements for reduction of TRANSIENT OVERVOLTAGES have been modified
