What is BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 - Safety of machinery about?

This is Part 1 of an international standard on the functional safety of machinery. Specifically, BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 provides guidance on the design and assessment of safety control systems.

Who is BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 - Safety of machinery for?

Relevant in all machinery related sectors, it will be used by:

  • Machine manufacturers, designers and integrators
  • Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance)
  • Machine users, both employers and employees
  • Service providers e.g. for maintenance
  • Consumers (in the case of machinery intended for use by consumers)

What does BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 - Safety of machinery cover?

BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 specifies a methodology and provides related guidance for the design and integration of the safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) that perform safety functions in machinery, including the design of software.

BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 applies to SRP/CS for high demand and continuous mode including their subsystems, regardless of the type of technology and energy (e.g. electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical).

Why should you use BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 - Safety of machinery?

  • It provides a systematic approach to designing and assessing the safety related parts of control systems for machinery
  • It provides detailed requirements for safe design, verification, validation, and use of machinery to ensure safety
  • It provides guidance on how to establish and achieve the required performance levels of risk reduction needed to achieve effective risk control
  • It provides greater clarity than existed previously therefore allowing users to design safety control systems with a greater degree of certainty
  • It can help users develop their expertise, improve their efficiency and improve their risk management

BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.

What’s new about BS EN ISO 13849-1:2023?

This is a revision of BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015. The major changes in BS EN ISO 13849-1.2:2022 are:

  • The structure has changed to clarify the process that should be followed, helping users navigate this complex subject
  • The software requirements have been expanded and strengthened to account for increased reliance on software for safety systems
  • The new version integrates Part 2 from the previous version to one document, reducing the number of standards needed for compliance
