BS EN 953:1997 specifies the general requirements for the design and construction of both fixed and removable machine guards that protect persons from mechanical hazards. Focusing on the use of guards to minimise exposure to hazards and setting up protective barriers, this standard helps users to improve equipment safety. BS EN 953: 1997 doesn’t cover parts of guards that actuate interlocks, or the requirements for special systems relating to mobility and the ability to lift loads like rollover protective structures.
BS EN 953:1997 first looks at risk assessments, before explaining the main requirements for the design and construction of guards. This includes ways to contain hazardous substances, such as noise control, as well as ergonomic aspects, impact strength and rigidity. The standard also covers verification, maintenance, thermal stability and visibility.
