BS EN IEC 60519-1:2020

What is BS EN IEC 60519‑1 about? 

BS EN IEC 60519 series covers safety in installations for electroheating and electromagnetic processing BS EN IEC 60519‑1 is one of the parts of series of documents specifies the general safety requirements for industrial installations or equipment intended for electroheating (EH) and electroheating based treatment technologies as well as for electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM). 

BS EN IEC 60519‑1 deal with the significant hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events relevant to industrial EH and EPM equipment, as listed in Annex A, for normal operation and for single fault condition as well as under conditions of reasonably foreseeable misuse. 

Note: BS EN IEC 60519‑1 does not apply to equipment and appliances within the scope of 

• BS EN IEC 60079 (all parts) – i.e., equipment intended for use in potentially explosive Atmospheres 
• BS EN IEC 60335 (all parts) – i.e., household, commercial and similar electrical appliances, including room heating 
• BS EN IEC 60601 (all parts) – i.e., medical electrical equipment 
• BS EN IEC 60974 (all parts) – i.e., arc welding equipment 
• BS EN IEC 61010 (all parts) – i.e., equipment for laboratory use 

Note 2: BS EN IEC 60519‑1 does not provide requirements for type testing

IEC 60519‑1 on electroheating and electromagnetic processing is applicable to: 

• Aluminium processing industry 
• space heating 
• water heating 
• industrial processes 
• High-frequency magnetic field 
• DC magnetic field 
• DC magnetic and electric fields 
• Traveling magnetic field 

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60519‑1? 

Electroheating and electromagnetic processes come with a lot of specifications. People working with these devices must exercise extra caution. BS EN IEC 60519‑1 guidelines help you to apply standard general safety requirements for industrial installations or equipment for electroheating technologies and electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM) which helps reduce energy consumption and manufacturing cost in these industrial processes. 

BS EN IEC 60519‑1 specifies the requirements intended by you to do manufacturing with the safety of persons and property during the complete life cycle of the equipment from design through commissioning, operation, maintenance, inspection, to decommissioning, as well as in the event of a foreseeable single fault condition that can occur in the equipment. 

BS EN IEC 60519‑1 is intended for verifying whether the electroheating EH or electromagnetic EPM installation or equipment meets the safety requirements of this document through design, site acceptance tests, routine tests, or inspection. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN IEC 60519‑1:2020 supersedes BS EN 60519‑1:2015, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 60519‑1:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 60519‑1:2015. These include: 

• Removal of noise from the scope 
• Clarification of EMC requirements 
• Risk classification of hazards based on emission for all processing frequencies 
• Clarification of boundaries between IEC 60519 (all parts) and ISO 13577 (all parts)
