BS ISO 17278:2020

What is ISO 17278 about?  

ISO 17278 is an international standard that deals with processing raw natural rubber. 

ISO 17278 specifies a method for the determination of gel content for technically specified rubbers (TSR). It gives technical specifications such as the principle, reagents, apparatus, conditions, procedure, expression of the result, precision, and preparing the test report for the test method.

Why should you use ISO 17278?  

Investigation of the gel content of technically specified rubber proves to be helpful in the rubber industry, as it has the characteristic that it is insoluble in all the solvents.  

ISO 17278 helps you to measure the fraction of gel content that is useful in demonstrating the cross-linking reaction. The two values are used to determine the gel fraction corresponding to the amount of polymer that has cross-linked.  

 ISO 17278 gives you the test method as well as other specifications reagents, apparatus, procedure, etc. for calculation of gel content in rubber, which helps you while performing the tests on raw natural rubber. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS ISO 17278:2020 supersedes BS ISO 17278:2013, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 17278:2020 includes some technical changes as follows: 

• To solve the ambiguity with the scope, the term “LoV-TSR sample” in Clause 4 has been replaced by the term “TSR sample” 
• In 8.1, the words “two samples” have been replaced by “two test samples” 
• In 5.2, acetone has been added
