What is BS EN 1459-3 – Rough-terrain trucks about? 

BS EN 1459-3 is an international standard that discusses the interface between the variable reach truck and the work platform. 

BS EN 1459-3 deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the interface when it is used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer of the truck. The significant hazards covered by BS EN 1459-3 are listed in Annex A except the hazards listed below. 

Note: BS EN 1459-3 does not address hazards that may occur: 

• When handling suspended work platforms that may swing freely 
• When using non-integrated work platforms or other attachments not intended for the lifting of persons 
• When operating in potentially explosive atmospheres. 

Note: BS EN 1459-3 does not give requirements for the complete truck fitted with a work platform. BS EN 1459-3 does not address risks to parts of the truck other than the interface with the work platform.

BS EN 1459-3 on the variable-reach truck and work platform apply to: 

• Manufacturer of terrain vehicles 
• Quality testing personnel 
• Suppliers and distributors of ATVs 
• Companies related to warehouses and cargo vessels 

Why should you use BS EN 1459-3 – Rough-terrain trucks? 

It is the only machine in the lifting capacity range of 18 tons, which can be operated inside containers. It moves swiftly in confined spaces, such as warehouses and cargo vessels. A work platform is a fenced platform or a cage that can be moved under load to the required working position and from which erection, repair, inspection or similar work can be carried out. 

BS EN 1459-3 provides you with the general safety requirements in which safety is required to enable the truck to recognize that a work platform has been fitted. The truck function changes to the Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) function only when the work platform is: 

• Mechanically, electrically and, if necessary for the operation of any SRP/CS fitted to the platform, hydraulically fitted to the truck; and 
• Locked and interlocked
