BS EN IEC 60034‑5 discusses rotating electrical machines. It applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for rotating electrical machines.
BS EN IEC 60034‑5 defines the requirements for protective enclosures that are in all other respects suitable for their intended use and which, from the point of view of materials and workmanship, ensure that the properties dealt with BS EN IEC 60034‑5 are maintained under normal conditions of use.
Note 1: BS EN IEC 60034‑5 is applicable to explosion-proof machines, but it does not specify the types of protection for use in a potentially explosive (dust, gas) environment.
Note 2: BS EN IEC 60034‑5 does not specify degrees of protection against mechanical damage of the machine, or conditions such as moisture (produced for example by condensation), corrosive dust and vapor, fungus or vermin.
BS EN IEC 60034‑5 on rotating electrical machines classification of degree of protection is useful for:
Rotating electrical machines consists of rotor, stator and air gap between them. Stator and rotor consist of windings, in which rotor is installed in the stem and that stem connects to the motor and any other loads.
BS EN IEC 60034‑5 allows you to ensure:
As a user of BS EN IEC 60034‑5, it provides you with the test conditions and also the classification of degree of protection such as an indication of the degree of protection, compliance to the indicated degree of protection, external fans, drain holes. This all helps in manufacturing rotating electrical machines in a standardized manner.
BS EN IEC 60034‑5:2020 supersedes BS EN 60034‑5:2001, which is withdrawn. It includes:
