Excess flow valves (EFVs) are mechanical safety devices used in vehicles with a liquefied natural gas fuel system. They automatically stop or limit the flow of gas from a broken system to significantly reduce the risk of natural gas fire, explosion, personal injury, and/or property damage.
ISO 12614‑8 is part eight of the standard series that specifies tests and requirements for the excess flow valve, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use in the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. Its guidance is applicable to vehicles using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403‑1 (mono-fuel, bi-fuel, or dual-fuel applications).
ISO 12614‑8 provides requirements for two different valve designs: internal and external excess flow valves. A valve of either design could be one of two different types: shut-off or flow-limiter.

BS ISO 12614‑8:2021 edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 12614‑8:2014), which has been technically revised.
