Road Traffic Signal Controllers provide safe and smooth road traffic by conducting road traffic control in accordance with the time of day and the road traffic conditions. BS EN 50293 covers road traffic signal systems for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
BS EN 50293 for EMC requirements applies to road traffic signal systems. The range of products included within the scope of BS EN 50293 are road traffic signal systems and devices including, for example, signal heads, signalling devices and traffic signs, controller and housing, supports, interconnections, traffic detectors, monitoring equipment, as well as electrical supply.
Note: Road traffic signal systems operating in conjunction with other systems e.g., public lighting, railway systems; should also comply with the respective standard and should not reduce the safety of all the equipment. Central Office equipment is excluded from BS EN 50293. Items with a radio-communication function are also referred to the European ETSI standards.
BS EN 50293 on EMC requirements for road traffic signal systems is useful for:
Considering the number of electromagnetic signals present on busy streets on any given day, EMC requirements for road traffic signals have been defined in BS EN 50293. BS EN 50293 provides methods and criteria to assess the performance of road traffic signal systems equipment under typical roadside conditions.
BS EN 50293 provides EMC testing during the product design will help minimize the possibility that radiated or conducted emissions produced by your device will interfere with other electronic products in its vicinity.
BS EN 50293 also ensures product failure is prevented thus minimizing the risk of injury for road users. BS EN 50293 specifies requirements for road traffic signal systems which will make for an easier development, design, testing, installation, and maintenance process.
BS EN 50293:2012 supersedes BS EN 50293:2001 which is withdrawn. BS EN 50293:2012 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 50293:2001. These include:
