What is ISO 3219‑2 about?

ISO 3219‑2 is part 2 of a series of documents that specifies the general principles of rotational and oscillatory rheometry.

Why should you use ISO 3219‑2?

Basically, there are two measuring methods available in rheometry they are rotational tests and oscillatory tests. With rotational measurements the measuring bob turns in one direction, the user sets the shear rate profile, the different speeds of rotation and the rheometer determines the required shear stress. In oscillatory tests, the measuring system moves backwards and forwards at a set frequency and amplitude. The advantage of performing the test in such a way is that small strains are applied onto the sample allowing stiff and solid samples to be measured.

ISO 3219‑2 is covered primarily by two parts they are, measuring principles and measuring assembly. Measuring principles are rotational tests, oscillatory tests and various step tests. These different tests can be combined with one another to come to a conclusive outcome. Whereas measuring assembly helps you investigate the rheological properties using a measuring system consisting of a measuring device like a viscometer or rheometer and a measuring geometry like a cone-plate. In this way, ISO 3219‑2 gives you a great understanding of general principles of rotational and oscillatory rheometry.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 3219‑2:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 3219:1995, which will be withdrawn on publication of the rest of the 3219 series.

BS EN ISO 3219‑2:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 3219:1995. These are:

Plate-plate measuring geometry has been added
Relative measuring geometries have been added
Oscillatory rheometry has been added
