ISO 17677‑1 is the first part of the series that establishes a vocabulary of terms and definitions for resistance spot welding, projection welding and seam welding.
Note: In addition to terms used in English and French, two of the three official ISO languages, ISO 17677‑1 give the equivalent terms in German; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.

Spot welding is primarily used to join two or more metal sheets by applying pressure and heat from an electric current to the weld area. Projection welding is a variation on spot welding. The joining of workpieces made of similar or dissimilar materials along a continuous seam is known as seam welding.
ISO 17677‑1 helps you standardize the terminologies for spot, projection, and seam welding applications. Having a common point of reference for recognized and accepted vocabulary can prevent any misinterpretation and miscommunication between entities involved in the field of resistance welding. This can be particularly helpful to mitigate ambiguity in the designing and production process.
By adopting ISO 17677‑1-compliant vocabulary, seamless workflow of spot, projection, and seam welding processes can be achieved.
BS EN ISO 17677‑1:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 17677‑1:2009, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 17677‑1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 17677‑1:2009. These include:
