BS EN 13979-1 is the first part of the BS EN 13979 series of documents that defines a design assessment procedure of a forged and rolled monobloc wheel (RST).
BS EN 13979-1 describes, in particular, the assessment to be performed in order to use wheels on a European network which, in addition, have quality requirements in conformity.
This assessment requires that the conditions of use for the wheel are defined and BS EN 13979-1 provides a method for defining those conditions.
BS EN 13979-1 has been drawn up for wheels of non-powered tread-braked wheelsets and applies in full to this type of wheel. For wheels on which disc brakes are mounted or toothed transmission wheels or even wheels with noise reduction devices, the requirements may be amended or supplemented.
NOTE: The assessment of the design covers four aspects:
NOTE: BS EN 13979-1 does not cover the assessment of the hub or of the rim.
BS EN 13979-1 on forged and rolled monobloc wheel is useful for:
Monobloc wheels with a relatively thin web are curved in the plane of the wheel to give lateral strength through geometry. BS EN 13979-1 provides designs for forged and rolled monobloc wheels.
BS EN 13979-1 provides the application for which a wheel is to be assessed by the geometric parameters for interchangeability relating to functional, assembly, or maintenance requirements.
BS EN 13979-1 provides information about the parameters for thermomechanical assessment of tread-braked wheels brake shoes to cover the braking test with a single brake shoe.
Also, gives mechanical assessment to check the geometric quality of the tracks, curve parameters, maximum speeds, and acoustic assessment parameters influencing the noise emitted by the wheel of the railway.
Overall, BS EN 13979-1 helps you in assessing designs of forged and rolled monobloc wheels of railways to maintain the quality of the product and flexible and stable run of trains.
