BS EN 14730-1 is the first part of the BS EN 14730 series of standards that defines the laboratory tests and requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process using welds produced in workshop conditions.
Note1: BS EN 14730-1 applies to the joining of new Vignole rails as described in BS EN 13674-1 of the same profile and steel grade.
Note2: Compliance with the requirements of BS EN 14730-1 does not in itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic.
Note3: BS EN 14730-1 does not cover welds made between different rail sections, differently worn rails and different rail grades.

In the aluminothermic welding process, molten steel is poured into a mould surrounding the gap between the rail ends to be joined. The rail ends are connected by the liquid metal.
