BS EN 16186 is a series of the European standard on railway vehicles providing driver’s cab layout and access.
BS EN 16186‑4 is the fourth part of the BS EN 16186 series of documents that gives design rules and requirements in order to ensure proper access, lighting, seating, and exit of the driver’s cab. The different dimensions are based on the anthropometric data defined in EN 16186-1. The corresponding assessment methods are also included in BS EN 16186‑4.
BS EN 16186‑4 covers the following aspects:
BS EN 16186‑4 applies to driver’s cabs of Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU), Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), Railcars, Locomotives, and Driving trailers (Driving Coaches).
BS EN 16186‑4 applies to driver's desks installed on the left, on the right, or in a central position in the driver’s cab. Due to cab space and resulting desk integration constraints, desk layout can vary.
NOTE: BS EN 16186‑4 is not intended to be applicable for OTMs, tramways, metro, and light rail vehicles.
Who is BS EN 16186‑4 for?
BS EN 16186‑4 on railway driver’s cab is useful for:
Why should you use BS EN 16186‑4?
The cab, the driver's compartment of the rail vehicle is necessary to be designed for the locomotive/self-propelled rail vehicle's operation. BS EN 16186‑4 provides the requirements and door designing of railway driver’s cab so that the train crew is able to prevent the cab from being accessed by non-authorized persons.
Driver's cab dimensions are given in BS EN 16186‑4 enabling the driver to carry out his tasks efficiently and safely and giving the design and allocation of the driver’s seat to enable the driver to operate all primary controls.
Overall, BS EN 16186‑4 could help you design a layout of railway driver’s cab with the systematic measurement in order to determine seat design, door access, track visibility, displays design, and distance of the eye point from the windscreen ensuring the occupational injury prevention and interaction of workers with tasks, tools, machines, vehicles, and personal protective equipment.
