BS EN 16186 is a series of the European standard on railway drivers’ cab that discusses the design specification of the driver’s cab.
BS EN 16186‑3 is the third part of the BS EN 16186 series of documents that specifies all necessary design rules and associated assessment criteria as well as guidance concerning the design of information and the corresponding user interfaces of driver’s cabs of EMU, DMU, Railcars, Locomotives and Driving trailers.
BS EN 16186‑3 considers the tasks the driver has to carry out and human factors and specifies how information is arranged and displayed.
BS EN 16186‑3 is applicable to the following aspects:
NOTE: BS EN 16186‑3 is explicitly applicable to display applications like TRD, ETD, CCD, and TDD.
NOTE: BS EN 16186‑3 is not applicable to legacy ATP systems.
NOTE: BS EN 16186‑3 does not request any safety requirement related to the displayed information.
NOTE: BS EN 16186‑3 is not intended to be applicable for tramways, metros, and light rail vehicles.
BS EN 16186‑3 on railway driver’s cab is useful for:
The cab, the driver's compartment of the rail vehicle is necessary to be designed for the locomotive/self-propelled rail vehicle's operation.
BS EN 16186‑3 provides the characteristics of displays and visible or audible information along with display application and design principles.
The general design of displayed information as well as the design of buttons and keys is specified in BS EN 16186‑3.
Troubleshooting process for fault indication either visible or audible requesting driver warning and acknowledgement is provided in BS EN 16186‑3.
Overall, BS EN 16186‑3 could help you design a display of driver’s cab with the systematic measurement in order to determine track visibility, seat design, control and displays design, and distance of the eye point from the windscreen ensuring the occupational injury prevention and interaction of workers with tasks, tools, machines, vehicles, and personal protective equipment.
